Ms. Kinney

I am a Columbia College graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. I have taught in Latta for 24 years. I teach math and science. I will also be teaching the science lab for fourth grade. I really enjoy math and science, and look forward to an exciting new year with fresh challenges!

MATH

In math, our focus at this time is geometry.
Try This!
Geography Connection
Look at a map of the US. Most of the time, rivers, lakes and mountain ranges form the borders of states. For this reason, most of the states have curved border lines; therefore, they are not polygons.
What if they were?
Have your child trace the states using only straight lines for the borders. Then have them give the name of a polygon that best represents the shape of the state. if the shape of the state is a quadrilateral, have them classify the shape in as many ways possible.
For EXAMPLE:
Colorado is in the shape of a quadrilateral. It can be classified as a parallelogram and a rectangle.
The BIG Idea
Points, lines, planes and their classifications and relationships are the building blocks of geometry.
Please remember to practice you basic multiplication and division facts daily!
We are using thatquiz.org once a week to assess our basic fact knowledge.

SCIENCE
Very soon, we will begin our life science studies in 4th grade.
Living things have basic structural differences that scientists use to classify them. Most organisms grow and mature through several distinct stages of life that make up the organism's life cycle.
Classify Living Things
All living things are grouped into one of five kingdoms. Single-celled organisms include bacteria and protists. Plants are either vascular or nonvascular. Fungi include yeasts and mushrooms. Animals are either vertebrates or invertebrates.
Did You Know That....
The earliest known classification system was developed over 2,000 years ago by Aristotle. Ancient classification systems divided organisms based on whether they could move or were stationary. The modern system of classification was developed by Carolus Linnaeus in the eighteenth century. Later, taxonomists decided that many organisms cannot easily be classified into either kingdom, as plants or animals. This led to the development of a more complex system which include the kingdoms Monera, Protista, and Fungi, in addition to Plants and Animals.
